A team comprising police officers and a court bailiff reportedly stormed the premises of Metro TV to interrupt a live broadcast on Wednesday, November 27.
The intrusion was reportedly linked to a debt owed by the television station to telecommunications company Vodacom, an issue that has persisted for over three years and has now escalated into legal action.
The incident occurred under the authority of a writ of execution issued by the court, permitting the seizure of Metro TV’s assets to settle the outstanding debt.
According to reports, the bailiff, accompanied by the police, sought to enforce the court order by confiscating property belonging to the station.
The debt in question is said to be a protracted matter between Metro TV and Vodacom, dating back more than three years. While the specific amount owed remains undisclosed, it is clear that the situation has reached a critical juncture, necessitating legal intervention.
Sources close to the matter have emphasised that this is strictly a business dispute and is not politically motivated, countering rumours that have gained traction in the public sphere.
The situation became tense when the bailiff and police officers arrived at Metro TV’s premises. Armed with the court order, the bailiff attempted to take possession of the station’s property, only to be met with resistance from Metro TV’s private security personnel.
This standoff reportedly disrupted ongoing operations, including a live broadcast that was abruptly interrupted as the situation unfolded.
