The Member of Parliament for Odododiodio, Nii Lante Vanderpuye, has criticised the Electoral Commission (EC), alleging malpractice and bias in the recently concluded December 7 general elections.
Nii Lante Vanderpuye made his comments during an appearance on The Big Issue on Channel One TV on Saturday, December 21, where he accused the EC of deliberately undermining the democratic process to favour the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The MP did not mince words as he directed his accusations at the EC Chairperson, Jean Mensa, asserting that her leadership has been detrimental to Ghana’s democratic integrity.
According to him, the EC has consistently demonstrated actions that suggest a lack of concern for Ghana’s welfare.
He alleged that Jean Mensa’s focus appears to be skewed toward manipulating electoral outcomes to secure victories for the NPP, rather than ensuring free, fair, and transparent elections.
Nii Lante Vanderpuye further intensified his criticism by holding the EC accountable for the violent incidents and tragic loss of lives recorded during the 2020 and 2024 elections.
Citing statistics, Vanderpuye lamented that under Jean Mensa’s tenure, the country had witnessed an alarming increase in electoral-related fatalities, a stark departure from previous years.
He noted that six people lost their lives in the 2024 elections, while eight deaths were recorded in the 2020 elections.
“This EC is evil, and they personify what the Bible says that the evil intentions of man is continually.
“From day one, this EC has portrayed a particular intention and exhibited a particular attitude that they don’t have this country at heart. They are not concerned about what happens. Under this EC, six people have died in this [2024] election. In 2020, 8 people died. How many people died under Justice Blay Annan and Afari Gyan? It is your actions and what you do that led to these deaths.”
