Akwatia MP Ernest Yaw Kumi convicted

The High Court in Koforidua, Eastern Region, has convicted the Member of Parliament for Akwatia, Ernest Yaw Kumi, for contempt of court after he defied an interim injunction that barred him from being sworn in as a legislator.

Presiding over the case, Justice Senyo Amedahe found Mr. Kumi guilty of willfully disregarding the court’s directive, emphasising that his actions undermined judicial authority and the rule of law.

As a result, the judge issued a bench warrant for Mr. Kumi’s immediate arrest after he failed to appear in court for sentencing.

The legal dispute, which led to the injunction, stemmed from a challenge regarding the legitimacy of Mr. Kumi’s election victory in the December 2024 general elections.

A petitioner had sought the court’s intervention to halt his swearing-in until the matter was resolved. The High Court granted the request, instructing Kumi to refrain from assuming office until further notice.

Despite the explicit ruling, Kumi proceeded to take the Parliamentary oath and formally assumed his role as the Member of Parliament for Akwatia.

His actions triggered a legal backlash, culminating in contempt proceedings initiated by the court.
