Haruna Mohammed who is the Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has shot down claims that the party’s top brass is pulling strings behind the scenes to rally support for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
In an interview with Accra-based Citi FM on Monday, June 23, Haruna Mohammed said the party is not rallying support for any specific presidential aspirants ahead of the 2026 primaries.
The NPP’s General Secretary dispelled rumours following an endorsement of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia by a coalition of former Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs).
About 220 former appointees, identifying as the Forum of Former MMDCEs for Dr. Bawumia, held a press conference at the Alisa Hotel in Accra to throw their weight behind the former Vice President as the NPP’s flagbearer for the 2028 general elections.
But Haruna insists the national leadership had absolutely no hand in that declaration—or any other.
“People are saying [the party’s leadership preferred aspirant is Bawumia], but it is a rumour, and sometimes it is very difficult to speak to rumours. And I can tell you, on authority that the party leadership certainly does not have a hand in anybody’s declaration.
