The National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) parliamentary candidate for Binduri, Issifu Mahmoud, in the Upper East region has accused the MP for the area, Abdulai Abanga, of worsening the insecurity situation in the town and its environs.
Issifu Mahmoud said Abdulai Abanga’s inclusion on Parliament’s Youth, Sports and Culture Committee led to an escalation of chieftaincy disturbances in Binduri.
In an interview with Bolgatanga-based A1 Radio, Mr. Mahmoud said Binduri had been relatively peaceful until Abdulai Abanga was included on the committee.
He intimated that Binduri was peaceful between 2017 and 2020 but all that changed when Abdulai Abanga became the MP after the 2020 parliamentary elections.
“If you care to know, until recently, the only committee that the MP belongs to is the Chieftaincy Committee and I don’t need to tell you about the chieftaincy issues in Binduri. Not until he was made a member of that committee, I think Binduri and the people of that part of the region had enjoyed a peaceful environment even throughout the first term of the NPP, that is 2017 to 2020.
“His appointment on the Chieftaincy Committee has worsened the situation in the Binduri area. We were having peace between 2017 and 2020 in the area and could walk anywhere that I wanted in Bawku.”
“If you are in position as a member of the Chieftaincy Committee and you fail to use your position to prevent all these things [unrest in the area], then what is the role of the committee which he is a member?” Issifu Mahmoud further asked.
