In a move to safeguard peace during the upcoming December 7 general elections, Ghana’s political parties and their presidential candidates have collectively signed a peace pact.
The agreement underscores the political parties commitment to maintaining a peaceful environment before, during, and after the polls, a tradition that reflects Ghana’s dedication to upholding democratic values.
The signing ceremony, held on Thursday, November 28, in Accra, was attended by key political figures, including Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), and John Dramani Mahama, flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
The event marked the fourth Presidential Election Peace Pact in Ghana’s history, signaling the nation’s resolve to ensure electoral processes are free from violence and conflict.
Jean Mensa, Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), addressed the gathering, emphasising the Commission’s unwavering commitment to conducting elections that are peaceful, free, fair, and transparent.
She reassured the public that robust mechanisms have been put in place to ensure the integrity of the electoral process, adding that the EC has worked tirelessly to build a system that reflects the will of the people.
She further highlighted the importance of collaboration among political actors, the media, and security agencies to promote a stable environment, reiterating that peace is the cornerstone of democracy.
Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, representing the ruling NPP, made a heartfelt appeal to all political stakeholders to prioritise peace over political differences.
In his remarks, he highlighted Ghana’s commendable record of democratic transitions and urged all actors to safeguard the nation’s reputation as a beacon of democracy in Africa.
John Dramani Mahama, the NDC flagbearer, also expressed his support for the Peace Pact but voiced concerns about the lack of accountability for individuals who instigate violence.
According to Mahama, the effectiveness of peace agreements depends on swift and decisive action against perpetrators of electoral violence.
The Peace Pact ceremony served as a unifying moment for the nation’s political leaders, reminding Ghanaians of the shared responsibility to uphold the principles of democracy.
It also highlighted the critical role of collaboration among various stakeholders in ensuring a smooth electoral process.
